Thiksey Monastery
Around 19 kilometers from Leh, Thiksey Monastery (also known as Mini Patola) is a beautiful red, ochre and white colored establishment on the top of a hill. Located at an altitude of 11,840 feet and counted amongst the largest monasteries in Ladakh, the 12 storied building houses Buddhist art such as paintings, swords, thangkas, statues, etc. The monastery features a huge pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings and a 15 meter high Buddha statue at the main prayer hall. The monastery is known for its temples, mainly the Maitrayee Buddha and Lamokhang Temple. The iconic 49 feet tall statue of Maitreya Buddha is the star highlight of the monastery. It is advised to dress conservatively while visiting the monastery.
Location 2: Hemis Monastery
45 kilometers from the city of Leh, the 11th century Hemis Monastery is an iconic Himalayan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa sect of Mahayana Buddhism, resting on a mountain along the west bank of river Indus. One of the largest and most famous Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh, it is known for a collection of Buddhist relics and several ancient items like paintings, weapons, etc. Out of all this, the most striking feature of the monastery is the tall statue of Buddha looking out at the valley; also considered the wealthiest in the region. It is recommended to dress conservatively while visiting the monastery
Location 3: Leh Palace
Constructed during the 17th century by the royal Namgyal family, Leh Palace, located in Leh city, is a fine example of medieval Tibetan architecture. While it earlier served as the residence to the Namgyal dynasty, today the palace is the administrative office of the Archaeological Conservation Organization which is owned by the Indian Government. A Victory Tower, built in the memory of Ladakhi soldiers is a famous landmark here. From the palace, one could see spectacular views, making it popular amongst photographers. Comfortable shoes are advised as a fair amount of walking is involved.
Location 4: Shanti Stupa
Just five kilometers away from Leh, Shanti Stupa, built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu, is a beautiful white-colored domed-shaped structure on a hilltop in Chanspa. A symbol of world peace and prosperity, it commemorates 2500 years of Buddhism. Around the stupa, there are various panels, depicting the life stories of Lord Buddha. From here, you could see a panaromic view. It is suggested to dress modestly while visiting the site. Also, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes to as tourists will have to climb a series of 500 steep steps.

Location 1: Hunder Dunes
Stark, beautiful and remote, the Hunder Village is an oasis in the middle of a cold desert in Nubra Valley. It has acquired fame for its desert landscape and its sand dunes. Adventure enthusiasts come here to ride on the Bactrian camels, walk along the desert and take-in breath-taking natural beauty.
Location 2: Diskit Monastery
Approximately 135 kilometers from Leh city, Diskit Monastery or Diskit Gompa is a 14th-century monastery which is considered as the oldest and largest Buddhist Monastery in the Nubra Valley region. Constructed in a Tibetan style, the monastery belongs to the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is home to beautiful murals and frescos, a 32 meter Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the entire region, a huge drum and many images of fierce guardian deities. Standing on a hill above the floodplains of Shyok river, the gompa roof offers panoramic views of Nubra valley.
Location 3: Khardung La Pass
Situated at an altitude of 18,379 feet, Khardung La is counted amongst the highest motorable passes in the world. Gateway to the remote Nubra and Shyok valleys, the mountain pass holds a strategic significance as supplies to the Siachen Glacier. Khardung La offers astonishing views and remains popular amongst travelers, especially adventure enthusiasts. Necessary precaution needs to be taken by all the travelers in general and people with breathing problems in particular.

Location 1: Pangong Lake
Located at an altitude of 14,200 feet, Pangong Lake, also known as Pangong Tso, stretches from India to China. The crystal clear waters of the Pangong Lake change its color in many shades of blue and green with the changing position of the sun in the sky. A refreshing phenomenon and a sheer treat for eyes, the lake is a beautiful contrast of deep blue water against the strong hues of brown land. Though the brackish water supports negligible vegetation or aquatic life, the lake is also a haven for bird watchers. Inner Line Permit is required to visit here which can now be availed online as well. Also, this high grassland lake has made an appearance in several Indian movies.
Location 2: Chang La Pass
Situated at the height of 5, 360 meters above sea level, Chang La is the third highest motorable mountain pass in the world. The literal meaning of the term Chang is South and Pass is South. Mostly, tourists cross the pass on their way to Pangong Lake from Leh. Since the pass is located close to Indo-China border, an Inner Line Permit is required to here. With snow cover present throughout the year, the pass is a photographer's paradise. Do note that people with breathing problem should take a proper precaution due to its location at a high altitude. Car itineraries usually do not include an extended stop here, therefore keep a lookout while you pass by this attraction.
